Empowering Voices: Navigating Culturally Responsive Evaluation in Indigenous Communities

Synopsis:
The theme of this symposium focused on why culturally responsive evaluation in Indigenous communities is not only a researcher’s responsibility, but also a requirement in fulfilling one’s commitment to reconciliation with Indigenous peoples. This responsibility includes respecting the autonomy of Indigenous peoples, creating space for empowerment and collaboration, having a wholistic understanding, ensuring appropriate ethical considerations are made, and promoting meaningful policy change.

The methods and findings from a research project, titled: “Pathways: A guide for developing culturally safe and appropriate patient-reported outcome (PROMs) and experience measures (PREMs) with Indigenous peoples”, were shared.

The first is a project that was identified as a need in BC in response to requests for patients to complete outcome and experience surveys in healthcare. The second is a project in partnership with the Ministry for Children and Family Development to help inform approaches to evaluating Indigenous-specific programs and services or programs and services serving Indigenous families and communities. The British Columbia Office of Patient-Centered Measurement and the Ministry for Children and Family Development were partners on these projects.

During the presentation, co-presenters shared from and reflected on the knowledge bundles gathered through their respective projects, emphasizing the centring of process (e.g. Elder/Old One leadership, honouring youth wisdom and voices, centring ceremony, following protocols and prioritizing relationships and relationality) in order to generative meaningful outcomes.
